in Watercolours & Oils
Choose the level and medium to suit you:
Watercolour
Foundation and Intermediate are one-day courses; Advanced is a
two-day course.
Foundation: Discovering Watercolour : developing
skills
This course is aimed at absolute beginners, and those with limited
experience. Topics will include: materials; choices of colour and
colour-mixing; simple composition.
Intermediate: Exploring Watercolour : putting on some style
This course is aimed at students with some experience and some
confidence. Including all aspects of the first course, students will go on
to explore effects of light, shadow and of random colour.
Advanced: Mastering Watercolour: extending your range & developing
individuality
This course will synthesise all aspects of the previous two courses, to
include advance work bringing together breakdown to abstraction in the vein of
the master watercolourists such as J.M.W. Turner, and the detail of Girton
and Cotman.
Oils
Advanced
level is a two-day course.
Foundation/Intermediate: Exploring Oils: getting rid of gremlins and learning to love
oils
This course is aimed at absolute beginners and those with limited experience
of painting in oils. Firstly, get rid of the gremlins about handling oils,
such as messiness or the smell/feel of the paints - it is still a master's
medium! Explore the freedom of oils and relish the fact that no mistake is
indelible. You will consider materials, choice of palette and colour
mixing, use of different mediums, simple composition; the effects of brushwork
and finishing techniques. You will go on to produce a finished oil
painting.
Advanced: Mastering Oils: pushing your boundaries and developing
individuality
This course is aimed at students with some experience and some
confidence. Including all aspects of the first course, students will gain
expertise in sophisticated effects of light, shadow and tonal breakdown.
Techniques to be developed will include subtle effects of brushstrokes/palette
knives/hands on effects etc.
